Marco Rubio’s recent defense of Germany’s far-right AfD party—condemning the German government’s designation of it as extremist and calling it “tyranny in disguise”—is not only hypocritical, it’s absurd. Before lecturing democracies abroad, Rubio might take a closer look at the record of the Trump administration he so loyally serves: an administration that ignored court rulings, pressured universities to conform ideologically, spread lies about a stolen election, and even floated imperial fantasies like annexing Canada and Greenland. All while promoting policies that dehumanized migrants and undermined the Constitution. Now, with Trump’s approval ratings in steady decline and his latest antics including digitally dressing up as the Pope, Rubio’s outburst looks less like a defense of democracy and more like a desperate distraction. If tyranny is the concern, perhaps he should worry more about the authoritarian rot festering at home.
