Syria’s New Rulers Are Already Failing Serious doubts are emerging about the credibility and long-term intentions of Syria’s new leadership. Ahmed Sharra, the rebel commander who toppled the Assad regime, has declared himself interim president in a closed-door meeting attended only by his military allies. No Druze, no Christians, no Alawites, no Kurds—so much for the promised inclusivity. Political parties have been dissolved without explanation, and there’s no clear timeline for elections. Journalists who dared to ask whether they could criticize the new rulers were told in no uncertain terms that they could not. Meanwhile, Syria remains in chaos. The economy is in freefall. Sharra has little control over the south and east. ISIS is regrouping in the desert. Israel strikes across the border at will. Stability is nowhere in sight.
